If you are like me you are typing all day - almost everyday. In my typing style i tend to lay my wrists right on the desk and kind of lean back in my chair. In effect my hand is a bit flat and almost flush to the keyboard when i type. My fingers are a bit long so i find the “correct” typing position cramps up my hands because i need to bend my fingers too severely for most keyboards.

Being a bit flat on the keyboard means i prefer a very low-profile bigger key. For those of you familiar with the IBM thinkpad keyboard i have always been fond of it and it seems to work very well for me in terms of a laptop keyboard.

I have went through the grand sum of no less than six different keyboards in the past two years. Including several no name units bought at my local - i plunked down about $60.00 US for a microsoft wireless 1000 optical desktop and about $90 US for a microsoft wireless optical desktop pro. I absolutely hated both of them - i found both to have very high and small-faced keys and neither of them had any “feel” to them - which i find usually means that the keys don’t have a decent tactile switch under them. Surprisingly to me the wireless optical pro seems to be well rated…

So after doing some research - it seems that every single keyboard that someone has said tagged as the “greatest keyboard of all time” has been discontinued and the only other keyboard i was interested in - the ibm spacesaver II - runs $200.00 bucks.

Eventually - i tried what is now my favorite keyboard and it seems to be available almost everywhere - the Macally ICEkey. It has got a fantastic springy tactile touch, the unit weighs 2 pounds so its nice and heavy, it doesn’t have that cheap plastic feel like a lot of keyboards - it’s very sturdy, and best of all - the keys are large and very low - so you don’t need to bang the hell out of them to press down. You can’t beat the macally icekey for the price - $50 USD retail.

For some reason it’s only listed as mac compatible - which is definitely not the case. Also as a plus it’s got two USB ports up on the top of each side (well it’s really a net gain of plus one - the unit itself uses a port). Highly recommended for the price - check out the icekey!
